Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
